Former unified lightweight champion George Kambossos Jr. has said he will make his debut at 140 in March and then challenge IBF light welterweight champion Richardson Hitchins for the belt in June or July.
Hitchins (19-0, 7 KOs) called the former One-hit wonderKambosos Jr. (21-3, 10 KOs), after a 12-round split decision win over IBF 140-lb champion Liam Paro last month on December 7. George doesn’t deserve a world title until we lower the bar on what a fighter has to do to get a crack at the belt.
The attitude of ‘Emperor’ Kambossos is that Hitchins will take the fight if he wants it, but he sees New York as “weak” as he “hasn’t made any money”. Cambossos made a small fortune four years ago on November 27, 2021, winning an upset against injured ring-rust Teofimo Lopez.
He beat Jorge Lopez by a 12-round split decision but has done very little since then, going 1-3 over the past four years. Kambosos’ record should be 0-4 in his last four fights as his 12-round majority decision over Maxi Hughes on July 22, 2023 was highly questionable in the eyes of many fans.
“Yes, yes, I’ll say it a million times. He keeps saying you are not signing a contract. What contract? you want me You are the champion, and you have not earned any money. You are brilliant. George Kamboss Jr fightTalking about IBF light welterweight champion Richardson Hitchins.
“This means nothing to me. I’m coming for you. Want to get your head out, and want to make some money? Cool, come make some money and I’ll take that belt off you. Many people call me. I knew he was going to jump on it. I knew I was under his skin. I’m living rent-free in your head. I’m under his skin. I love getting under these New Yorkers.
“I will do this for the first time in 140 March. It’s not ready until June or July, and there we are. We can do it right after March, next month. We can do it the next day, no problem. I’m here for this guy,” Kambosos said of wanting to fight Richardson Hitchins.
Kambossos is getting ahead of himself. He still needs to win his debut at 140 in March before he has a chance to challenge for the IBF title in June or July for Hitchin. If Kamboss promoter Eddie Hearn equates him to a half-decent opponent for March, he’ll surely lose. That leaves George with an abysmal record of 1-4 in his last five games. Thing is, he’s not a shooter like him. He was not good in the first place.
“It’s not a secret. Me and Parro, we’re gonna have that big, big fight. I was going to do my job in March and then have a big stadium fight. I am a very big name The next day, Hitchins called me at Boxing World,” Kambossos said.
That should have been a disappointment for Cambosos when Liam Parro beat Hitchins by a 12-round split decision on December 7th in San Juan, Puerto Rico. All that money Kambossos was earning against former IBF 140-lb champion Paro went down the drain with the Hitchin loss, and it’s not coming back.
“I’m getting better every day. I feel good at this weight and am performing well in March. I’ll take this guy’s head off and then we’ll go straight into Hitchin. He says some things here and there. What bothers me? You are not one tenth of Devin Honey. You are not one tenth of Teofimo Lopez. You are not one-tenth of Lomachenko,” Kambossos said.
The only fighter Kamboss Jr. beat was Teofimo Lopez, who had a bad night coming off a long layoff in 2021. George lost twice to Devin Haney and lost to Vassily Lomachenko in his last fight on May 12, 2024. He hasn’t fought since. Kambossos is seen as a good shooter, but not a good fighter from the get go. So, losing repeatedly only shows his level or lack thereof.
