MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines is walking a diplomatic tightrope as it deepens security and economic ties with Taiwan while upholding its One-China policy — a stance complicated by both countries’ shared concerns over an increasingly assertive Beijing.

A clear example of how the Philippines observes its One-China policy is its presence in Taiwan only through the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO), and not an official embassy. But Philippine presidents through the years — more recently, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. — have either eased existing restrictions or sought closer ties with Taiwan.

On Friday, August 8, Rappler editor-at-large Marites Vitug sits down with former MECO chairperson Angelito Banayo to discuss how to navigate the tricky relationship between the Philippines and Taiwan, and how this has progressed in the face of escalating tensions with China.
