Will anyone go after Bill Belichick, a $10 million buyout?

Tuesday BFT Live The draft focused on the most interesting names in the recent coaching circuit. While brainstorming ideas, I kept coming back to one name.

Bill Belichick.

Yes, he’s North Carolina’s new coach. Of course, he didn’t go there to leave. But his contract gives him a path out of Chapel Hill. As of June 1, 2025, its value is $10 million. And then it becomes a million dollars.

For an NFL owner, $10 million is a pittance. It’s several weeks of superyacht recruitment and maintenance. If someone wants Belichick, $10 million is no barrier.

Since Belichick is not part of any NFL team, there won’t be the same paper trail that exists for assistant coaches. Teams can talk to him confidentially. Belichick, who is currently recruiting the Tar Heels, will insist on confidentiality from any NFL team he talks to.

Naturally, he appears to have explored all options before taking the UNC job. When the Bucs were struggling, Belichick advisor Mike Lombardi floated a false rumor that coach Todd Bowles was considering retirement. If they lose badly to the leaders in the wild card round, could that change?

The most likely play at this point would be to focus on offensive coordinator Liam Quinn, who could end up getting a head coaching job elsewhere. However, a buyout for Belichick wouldn’t be a deal-breaker if someone really wanted him.

Right now, we’re more interested in knowing whether or not someone will talk to him, not whether he’ll leave. Next year, when he could get the equivalent of an oligarch’s club parking ticket, it will be interesting to see if his name comes up.
