Ukraine hit several targets inside Russia on Tuesday in what it says is the “most massive” attack of the war so far.
Deported ammunition and chemical plants were captured in several regions, some of which were hundreds of kilometers from the border, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Sources at Ukraine’s SBU intelligence agency told the BBC that the overnight attack was a “painful blow” to Russia’s ability to wage war.
Russia said it fired US-supplied Atacms missiles as well as the UK’s Storm Shadow cruise missiles, and vowed to respond to the attack.
At least nine airports in central and western Russia brought traffic to a temporary halt, while strikes forced the closure of schools in southwestern Saratov.
The strikes in the border region of Bryansk caused explosions at a refinery, ammunition depots and a chemical factory believed to produce gunpowder and explosives, a Ukrainian security source told the BBC.
But Kiev also struck much deeper into the country, with the General Staff saying it hit targets up to 1,100 kilometers (700 miles) from the border.
In the western region of Saratov, authorities have reported a “massive” drone attack.
Two industrial plants in the cities of Engels and Saratov were damaged, regional governor Roman V. Busargin wrote in Telegram.
On Tuesday, students were taught online after local schools closed.
Last week, Kyiv said an oil storage facility in Engels was hit – prompting a days-long effort to fight the blaze and Busgarin declaring a state of emergency.
Officials in the western Tula region also reported an overnight attack, where regional governor Dmitry V. Milyaev Russian said air defenses shot down 16 drones.
There were no casualties, he said, although the falling debris damaged some cars and buildings.
Elsewhere, a gas storage facility near Kazan was hit in a drone strike in southwestern Tatarstan, local officials said, with no casualties reported.
Moscow also launched dozens of drones over Ukraine overnight, and several airstrike alerts in and around Kiev.
Ukraine’s Air Force said it shot down about 60 of the 80 drones involved in the attack, which caused no casualties.
Ukraine is scrambling to push back as best it can against Russian military advances on the ground, a week before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.
Trump said Preparing to meet Vladimir Putin on his return to the White House.
He has expressed skepticism about US military and financial aid to Kiev, and has pledged to prioritize negotiating an end to the war.
He has not clarified how he plans to do it.
