Todd Monken: ‘Unfortunate’ NFL recruiting cycle has coaching interviews during playoffs

Todd Monken is the offensive coordinator for the Ravens, who are preparing to face the Bills in the divisional playoffs on Sunday. He is also a head coaching candidate, having interviewed with multiple teams this week. He admits it’s not ideal.

Monken told reporters he wishes there was a different set-up for coaching interview times to avoid conflicts, but said his primary focus this week is on Sunday’s game.

“The way the system is set up is unfortunate, but it is what it is,” Monken said. “I’m excited to play the Bills. That’s where my minds are.”

So what should the system be? Monken said he doesn’t necessarily think there is a better option.

“I don’t think there’s an easy way, or they’d be doing it already,” Monken said. “It is what it is. It’s like trying to understand the things they were trying to understand. There is no easy way. There is no easy solution.”

Monken said he spent time last offseason preparing for the possibility of getting head coaching interviews and returned to that job this week instead of starting over on what his pitch to NFL teams would be.

“Everything I needed to do for the interviews I did during the offseason,” Monken said.

As long as the system is the way it is, coaches in Monken’s position will have some conflict during the playoffs. And Monken is right that it is an accident.
