Tiger Woods saddened by LA fires; no decision was made on Genesis

Tiger Woods said Tuesday that no decision has been made regarding the status of next month’s Genesis Invitational as the area continues to deal with devastating wildfires.

Woods, who grew up near Anaheim, Calif., said after his TGL debut in South Florida that “there are a lot of other things that are bigger” than organizing the tour’s $20 million event that benefits his foundation. Genesis is held in Riviera, which has so far suffered no damage, but is located in the hard-hit Pacific Palisades.

“It’s just sad,” Woods told reporters at the SoFi Center. “Max (Homa) and I grew up there. We are SoCal kids. To see what happened, I knew a couple of people who lost everything, so it’s just hard.

“As far as Genesis is concerned, we’re just trying to figure everything out and make sure everyone is safe and we’ve got appointments going forward. But right now, we’re not really focused on the tournament. It’s more about what we can do to help everyone who is struggling, who have lost their homes and whose lives have been changed.”

The tour said in a memo to players last week that it is still monitoring the situation in Southern California, with the possibility that the event, scheduled for the 13th-16th, could be postponed. February, move to another place.

Woods has not competed in an official event since the Open Championship last July. He underwent another back surgery in the fall before returning to play with son Charlie at the PNC Championship last month.

Woods said his health is not an issue right now. “My game is not very good,” he said.

Homa, a former Genesis winner who is part of Woods’ TGL team, said it “seems silly at this point to be too focused on the golf tournament when people are still keeping this going and living in a little bit of fear in SoCal.”
