The truth is about teaching immigrant students in Los Angeles

When watching students at the graduation ceremony, I saw many who had to overcome a lot. Many students suffer from horrific and terrible stories on how they reach the United States – stories that you can usually only learn by persuading them.

There is a student who grew up in a residential complex in San Salvador, where girls reached a certain age who were obligated to become a “friend” of a member of any gang controlled by that area. When she was fourteen years old, they came to her, but she was ready, and fired a member of the gang before leaving the country, walking in Guatemala and Mexico, desperate to find her father in Los Angeles.
