Carlsbad, California – for the Summerhays family, the size has always been common travel – on the golf course.
Earlier this month, this journey has reached a new milestone as three members of the reserved golf family together with the State University of Arizona. At the beginning of the ASU, the sister Preston and Grace Summerhays, they compile athletes in the sun golf teams and both in communication, celebrated by their mother, Barbara Jean, who received his master’s degree in focus on religious studies.
For golf lovers, the name of the summer should not be introduced. Bruce Summerhays, family patriarch and Boyd’s uncle, enjoyed a successful career at PGA Tour Champions. His son, Boyd Summerhays, her husband Barbara Jean, is the former PGA Tour Pro and now one of the best game instructors, trainers like Tony Finau. He also played a vital role in leading the development of his children from junior golf phenom to collegial stars.
Preston, former American junior amateur champion and American competitor, is preparing to start their professional career. Grace, recently called 2025 large 12 female golf-athlete in the year, limited one of the most interesting careers in the history of the ASU program, gleaming both in the course and in the classroom, a true reflection of her family excellence.
But this time, the spotlight belonged to Barbarian Jean.
It has always been the heart of your family, a permanent source of strength, encouragement and support. From the help of domestic tasks to cheer by, Barbara Jean be poured into the growth and success of children. Over the years, as she supported her children through their education, something unexpectedly happened: she discovered her own love for learning. It’s been 18 years since she deserved the first degree. After raising children, juggling the schedule of travel, managing the household and supporting their athletic dreams, the idea to return to the school that is constantly pulling on her.
“You’re never too old to go back and chase a dream,” she said.
Inspired by the same plant he nurtured in his children, Barbara Jean made a bold decision to return to the classroom. It was not easy – balancing courses with family life is never – but this time it is encouraged by the support of the people themselves who have always been a championist.
“Let me see them (her children and my husband) cheered me really cool,” she said.
Despite their variety of schedule, Barbara Jean always found out the time to apply to their children. “Occasionally I would stop after class,” she said. Preston, who lived with Josele Ballester and Connor Williams teammates, remembers it as he jumped just to say hello.
Preston, who began in the Semester before grace, at first he found hard to be far from home. “Although I was close home, it was actually a little hard, I’m just all the time with my family, and then to be far away,” he said. “So to join the semester every day and saw it on a bird every day, what he practiced with her, it made me a lot better better experience.”
Adding Mom on the classmate list was even bigger.
The joint diploma of the family was more than a milestone – it was a moment full of circle. Grace, Preston and their youngest brothers, Cameron, looked at his mother with pride. Boyd, the Middle School Barbara Jean, was equally proud.
“We met in high school, and it is obviously beautiful, but one of the things she really attracted me that she was a great student; I loved it too. And she wasn’t beautiful; he said Boyd.
The two often helped in domestic tasks in high school, built a partnership on the ground floor and love and learning.
“Although I train our children, I can’t work without Mom,” Boyd added.
Barbara Jean is there every step, encouraging her children to academic as much as athletic, teaching, supporting and pushing to take them seriously.
This time, a woman who has long been a family foundation became his inspiration. Watching his two oldest children, graduating together with his mother, the moment Boyd will never forget.
“It’s an incredibly achievement for all three, and I couldn’t be proud.”
In addition to the family in the heart of everything, Grace reflected in what was all meant, “It was especially we are that we are already here (at the NCAA championship), but I would be able to graduate with them. I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else.”
Grace and Preston, for one end time for the ASA in the NCAA and female and male golf charts in Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, California, closing their collegial chapters with pride and purpose.
And the story is far from the end.
With Preston’s professional debut on the horizon, the Summerhays family remains redefined hereditary, one swing and one degree, one.
