The pro ball of the Korn Ferry Tour makes a rare stop in the Bahamas

Play the ball as it lies.

That’s what the Rules of Golf instructed Cooper Dossey to do during Sunday’s Korn Ferry Tour season opener at the Ocean Club Golf Course on Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

Dossey, a 26-year-old Baylor alum from Austin, Texas, was coming off his first birdie of the day on the par-4 13th hole (he started his round on the back nine or front nine for public play) when his tee shot on the par-4 14th .the hole stopped on an upside-down piece of turf from a nearby pit.

“This has never happened before,” Dossey said later. “One of my better birds!”

Yes, Dossey recovered to add two more as part of a bogey-free, 4-under 66, six shots back of first-round leader John VanDerLaan, who opened with a 60.

Dossey finished 76th in Korn Ferry Tour points last season, missing full status by one spot. He was initially an alternate for this week’s tournament, but entered after the PGA Tour expanded the field to 144 players – and several late withdrawals.
