Four people were injured in a stabbing in Tel Aviv on Tuesday, Israeli emergency services said.
Ichilov Hospital said three victims were being treated, including one “in critical condition with a knife wound to the neck”. The attacker, a 28-year-old foreign national, was shot on the spot, the police reported.
Israel’s Shin Bet intelligence agency said it is conducting an investigation after a decision was made to allow a man with Moroccan citizenship and US permanent residency to enter the country.
It is the second stabbing in Tel Aviv in four days, before another person was attacked and shot by an armed civilian on Saturday.
Tuesday’s attack took place on Nahalat Binyamin Street, an area known for its restaurants and nightlife, and nearby Gruzenberg Street, where the assailants stabbed and shot another person to death.
Israeli media reported that an American residence permit and a border control card were found on the attacker’s body.
He entered on January 18 with an Israeli visa.
Border and immigration forces objected to the man’s entry into Israel while at Ben Gurion Airport, but the Shin Bet security service allowed him to enter, Israeli Interior Minister Moshe Arbel said.
“I call on Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar to investigate the serious incident and learn lessons as soon as possible,” he added.
The Shin Bet responded by saying, “Upon the individual’s entry into Israel, a security assessment was conducted, including questioning and additional checks, and it was concluded that there was no reason to deny his entry on security grounds. The incident will be investigated.”
Hamas did not claim responsibility, but praised the attack in a statement.
