Veterans dominated the front of the field, while the defending champion struggled in the season opener at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, in a race that could have a big impact on future races.
Chase Sexton survived a lap 1 incident with Eli Tomac and took the lead on lap 5 en route to his first win of the season. Tomac was in the lead when he forgot to “respect the track” and went into the front wheel. When it hit the ground, Sexton stumbled but kept the bike upright. The incident cost him two positions before Sexton regained his form and charged forward, passing holeshot winner Jorge Prado on lap 3 and Ken Roczen two laps later.
Roczen is off to a much better start in 2025 than he was in 2024. Last year, he barely cracked the top 10 and was more than a minute behind the 2024 winner, Jett Lawrence. After the 2025 race, Roczen said he would have preferred to finish second, as great starts in the past have not produced championships.
Jason Anderson also avoided early disaster when he bounced riders in two separate incidents on the opening lap. The impact on one of these was hard enough to break a pair of spokes on his front wheel. It was hard not to look down and see the extent of the damage at the height of the jumps, and the fear of bursting tires cost him a few seconds. Anderson finished second in last year’s season opener.
Cooper Webb got off to a slow start and finished his first lap in seventh. Webb is usually a rider who improves as the race progresses and constantly works his way forward. Webb settled into a comfortable position just one second behind Anderson, starting his season with a solid top five finish.
Tomac put on a show. After winning the heat, he came out of the gates hot and overtook Prado on the first lap. Tomac’s crash in a pace section was probably the only thing that prevented him from dominating the race, as he had to drop the field from 21st. On lap 3 he moved up to 15 tjh, on lap 7 he moved up to 10, and on lap 10 the top five. His progress stalled, but he was luckier than any other former champion.
Jett Lawrence crashed on the opening lap and dropped to the back of the pack. Everyone expected him to cut through the field like Tomac, but Lawrence was unable to make much progress. He couldn’t break the top 15 until lap 7 and couldn’t get much further, eventually finishing 12th.
Prado was excited to open the 2025 season as he will compete full-time in SuperMotocross this year. After getting the holeshot, he dropped to fourth at the end of the first lap, but took advantage of the mess and took the lead on lap 2. From there, he dropped back as more experienced Supercross riders went, but settled for seventh. Until he crashed on the 14th lap. Prado finished the day in 14th place.
