“Super Wild Card” no longer exists

Wild Card Weekend is no longer great. In name at least.

After noting on Tuesday the conspicuous absence of a name that appeared when the NFL added two more playoff berths and created a six-game opening round, we asked the league whether the word “super” had been deeply defined.

“The Super Game debuted during the 2020 season playoffs when the NFL introduced the new Wild Card format and added a team from each conference to make the playoffs, the first change since 1990,” the league said via email. “The ‘Super’ has been used for the last four seasons to help differentiate from the previous 30 years of the Saturday/Sunday schedule and raise awareness of the three days of Wild Card games. It has served its purpose as fans have responded well. Although it has been discontinued, there is no doubt that Wild Card games Card will still be great.

So, just as we used to call it “Super Wild Card Weekend,” it’s back to being Clark Kent Wild Card Weekend.

But, yeah, this year’s games could be very good. It wouldn’t take much for them to get better than the first round of the College Football Playoffs.
