Sonmez became the first Turkish player in the open era to reach the third round of Slam

Giennep Sonmez became the first Turkish player in the professional era who reached the third round of the Grand Slam tournament by Jinnu Wang -5, -5-5 by margin Wimbledon Thursday.

He hopes that his win is confirmed that it will not be so much before the other Turkish player arrives at that stage.

Sonmez said, “My mother and my team people told me that there are videos where kids were watching me back home, on TV’s Tennis Clubs,” Sonmez said. “And I hope they will be inspired or they think, ‘Oh, we can do it too.”

No Turkish male or female has made the third round of a Major since the beginning of the open era in 668, though the Cagla Airclake is 25-17-5. Three of these did the second round on the Grand Slam.

One has to go back 75 years to find the last Turkish woman, when Bahati Muslims reached the third round of the French Open in 1950.

23 -year -old Sonmez was supported by several Turkish fans in the crowd and selfie with some of them after the match.

“I feel that there are lots of Turkish people here (here) and it makes me very happy,” he said.

Last year’s Merida Open has a DBA title under Sonmez’s belt, but lost in the first round in the previous three major tournaments. This is the presence of his first Wimbledon.
