Snow showers are rare in the southern US; now the blizzard has hit

A rare winter storm is bringing snow and freezing rain to parts of the southern US, closing highways and airports and prompting a blizzard warning for southwest Louisiana.

In the video, nuns and a priest enjoy a snowball fight in Matairie, Louisiana, while a skier is carried down a street in Charleston, South Carolina.

Four people are believed to have died from exposure to the cold so far: two cold-related deaths are being investigated by authorities in Austin, Texas, and two deaths from hypothermia in Georgia and Milwaukee.

The extreme weather is part of a bitterly cold air mass that has descended on the southern and eastern US.
