MANILA, Philippines – In court proceedings, judges inhibit or excuse themselves from handling the case if there’s perceived or actual conflict of interest on their part. This is to preserve the integrity of the court as a fair and just tribunal.

Things are different in the impeachment trial as the Senate — which sits as an impeachment court — remains a political body even if it assumes such a role.

So, the question now is, should senator-judges inhibit from the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte due to their perceived bias in favor or against the Vice President?
