Mexico City – Ryan Truex has acknowledged over the past few weeks that Chris Gayle, crew head Chris Gayle, “stopped my heart.”
Denny Hamlin, in anticipation of the birth of his son, needed Truex to drive his car?
“Is that yes or no?” Truex said. “Every time it was.
Until Wednesday when Hamlin’s fiancé had the couple’s child and Hamlin decided to skip this weekend’s race at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Truex – who is Joe Gibbs Racing’s reserve manager and also does much of the team’s simulation work – was on the plane for Mexico on Thursday.
The last time a Truex chased Mexico, Martin Truex jr. Won the first XFinity race on this track in 2005. After Ryan Trueex sent his big brother about his news, Martin went back: ‘Truex’s are one-by-one in Mexico.’
As Ryan Truex noted: “So, no pressure.”
This has been his first cup start since 2014.
“My last time in Cup was not a great experience,” Truex said of his time with BK Racing, a under -funded team that later went into bankruptcy and had to sell his charter. “It didn’t go well for me. I didn’t enjoy it. It probably wasn’t the right step for me, career -wise, and I’ve fought back since.
“I enjoy everything I do at JGR. I have been able to participate part -time for the past few years and do all these things off the track. It was nice. It was nice to run part -time and have a few Saturdays at home, but it’s also nice to be on the track, so I feel like I’ve had a good balance over the last few years, and the couches are so different from what they are now. “
Truex started 102 career XFINITY. The three career series victories came in his last 18 Xfinity.
In Friday’s first workout, Truex was 36th on the velocity map under 37 cars.
Truex says he has modest goals for this weekend.
“Just just want to enjoy it,” he said before Friday’s workouts. “I don’t really have a set goals or expectations – I just want to enjoy the weekend. I ride a cup for Joe Gibbs during an international race – it’s not something I’ve ever dreamed of, just want to take everything and have a good time. “
