New York hired Tom Thibodeau to take over as the main coach of the team before the 2020-21 season. Things went very soon; He won the coach of the year in his first season at the helm and helped the Knicks to return to the post -season. The second year was a year down, but New York advanced the first round each of the last three seasons and made the finals of the Eastern Conference this season. During his five years at the head of the team, Thibodeau led the Knicks to a 226-174 record in the regular season and a Playoff 24-23 record, which included four wins in the series. So where are the Knicks from here? The last lead coach to run the Knicks to the playoffs before Thibodeau was Mike Woodson, and the coaches after him were not the most inspiring group. From Derek Fisher to Jeff Hornacek to David Fizdale, New York would avoid a repetition of one of the darkest times in the history of the franchise.
With the talent currently on the list and some elections to work for the next seasons, this should be an attractive place for potential coaching candidates. Of course, this will mean a lot of expectations, especially with the Eastern Conference, which becomes weaker than ever next season.
Rapielle Johnson: Well, here we are. Although Knicks’ decision to shoot Thibodeau is amazing at the surface level, especially with the team that reaches the conference finals for the first time since 2000, as is impressive? Thibodeau supported its initial line to the point where there was no experimentation until desperate time, with the Knicks they went to Indiana in a 0-2 hole. There is no doubt that he did an excellent job in turning around a franchise that was the laugh of the NBA when he took over.
Multiple appearances in playoffs, a trip to the conference finals and the consecutive seasons of 50 wins for the first time in 30 years are nothing for their mockery. However, as he lifted the Knicks apartment, it is fair to question the roof of the team with Thibodeau in office. Sometimes the best equipped person to start the climb is not the one that should take you to the top of the proverbial mountain.
As for the Knicks, Leon Rose will have to find someone willing to expand their rotation, especially at the beginning of the season. It is here that a team can experiment with different appearances and combinations, while maintaining key players a little fresh for the race. And what can the new coach and staff do it defensively? If the list is kept intact at the top, there is talk of a defensive system that will have to compensate the presence of two “less” defenders in Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anshony Towns. Finally, the culture built by Thibodeau cannot be overlooked. But this movement is a sign that the Knicks will further entrust Brunson, the captain of the team, to keep him.
Noah Rubin: At the end of the day, this is a league based on results. Each team has a different definition of what it looks like every season, and the team president, Leon Rose, obviously felt that, regardless of what Thibs has achieved, he was not the right man to lead this team to a championship next season. It’s so simple. Only time will say if it was the right decision.
This team could benefit from some offensive creativity from his next coach. In the playoffs, the Knicks had the worst percentage of attendance in the league. Almost half of the team’s shots on the playoffs were not assisted. In contrast, the pacers have had the best percentage of post -season assistance. The Knicks also had an average of 10.9 possessions of isolation per party in the playoffs. Apart from the Celtics, each team that spent more isolated time than New York lost in the first round and most lost in four or five games. They have two players who have promised more than 25 points per game in one season and two more wings with talented that have approached promotion 20 points per game. No matter how tremendous as Jalen Brunson when he plays Hero Ball, it is not the most sustainable style of play for a playoff career.
Thibs was known for relying on his headlines. Last season, Mikal Bridges announced that he spoke with Thibodeau about the enlightenment of the loading to the headlines. A name to see: Jonnie Bryant. He was a helping coach of Knicks under Thibodeau, who joined the squad of Kenny Atkinson in Cleveland last season and helped this franchise a leap to the next level. However, hiring a main coach to take on a winning team, in the country’s toughest media market, is a significant risk.
Former Villanova coach Jay Wright raises and would be popular with New Knicks players (including Brunson), but do you want to take on this NBA (or some NBA) job? The UCONN coach’s name, Dan Hurley, will also appear, although some executives in the League’s first question’s office wonders if his coach style would translate to the next level.
There is long -term possibilities: Grizzlies ‘former coach Taylor Jenkins, the heat assistant Chris Quinn, but if you really want to see that the heads of your Knicks’ friends exploit, create Doc Rivers. (There is no way that Rivers gets this job but the reaction is priceless.)
