Ross Chastain Stuns William Byron to win Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte

With a beautiful move to Turn 1, Ross Chastain remained the lead of William Byron with six laps and continued to win the Coca-Cola 600.

Chastain split the drug between Byron and Hamlin to earn its first cup series since last September. The Trackhouse Racing driver led only eight rounds, including the last seven on Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Chastain last started in a backup car after crashing his number 1 Chevrolet in practice a day earlier. He said his team worked until 2:30 on Sunday and then returned at 05:30 to complete the new car.

“This is the dedication it takes from Trackhouse,” Chastain told Prime’s Marty Snider after his sixth career victory in the cup. “There were people who had on Saturdays, and they came for this Chevy. To ride on that final run and pass on two cars that were better all night … Holy Cow, we just won the World 600!

Byron lost by 0.673 seconds, despite leading a 283 of 400 rounds and winning all three phases.

“He caught me, I tried to defend just and got a little stiff,” Byron told Trevor Bayne of Prime. “Disappointing. Just to lead so many rounds and such a great effort through our entire team, and I could expect the last to be better. Just suck. We will just keep going and keep putting race together. ‘

Poland-Sitter Chase Briscoe finishes third, followed by AJ Allmendner and Brad Keselowski.

Hamlin led 53 rounds while trading the lead 15 times with Byron, but his no. 11 Toyota had to go into the dimples after he no longer had fuel. He finished 16th.

“You can’t change the results, so you’ll have to live with it,” Hamlin told Kim Coon van Prime. “They are the benefits. I’m not a pit -man. I tried to do everything I could.

“We had a wonderful car, with a fun struggling.

After crashing and finishing 27th in the Indy 500, Kyle Larson’s wretched Sunday continued in the Coke 600.

The driver of Hendrick Motorsports led 34 of the first 41 rounds, but spun at Lap 43 to cause the first warning flag. Larson fell down a shot in 33rd place, but his team has numerous repairs to the no. 5 Chevrolet done.

The champion of the 2021 Cup series regained the leading round and ran 16th when he was hit by Daniel Suarez’s number 99 Chevrolet, who slipped to the track after contact with Ryan Blaney and Chase Briscoe.

Crashes ended Kyle Larson’s races in Indianapolis and Charlotte.

The wreck knocked Larson in 37th place.

“I saw smoke, tried to get through the inner field and just didn’t come across enough,” Larson told Trevor Bayne van Prime. “Yes, I marked and ended our night. Just a bummer of a day all around. ‘ A few mistakes at my end. ‘

Larson said his initial turn was caused by contact with the extracurricular when he briefly lost the handle.

“I just got a lot of loose in (turn) 3 from nowhere, caught the wall, done damage and thought the team did a good job to get us where we were somewhat comfortable for the last 100 rounds,” he said.

The driver of Hendrick Motorsports will not be able to complete 1,100 miles, but will be on his way to Charlotte Motor Speedway early for the Coke 600.

“I just had to get started from now on and still end up.”

Between Indy and Charlotte, Larson completed 595 of a possible 1100 miles.

“Not the day I wanted, but thank you to Rick and Linda Hendrick, all from Hendrick Motorsports, Arrow McLaren, everyone involved in the day that is memorable the day,” Larson said. “Even if it was not unforgettable for a good reason. Just unhappy. Hopefully we can run it back one day. ‘
