American Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as the 267th leader of the Catholic Church on Thursday, May 8, after a two-day conclave to choose the new pope.

Taking the name Leo XIV, he is the first pontiff from the United States. He also holds Peruvian citizenship after having served as a missionary in Peru for two decades.

The conclave included 133 cardinals who were eligible to participate in a papal election.

Pope Leo XIV signaled on Saturday, May 10, he would continue with the vision and reforms of Pope Francis, telling the world’s Catholic cardinals the late pontiff left a “precious legacy” that they must continue.

In his first meeting with all the cardinals since his election as pontiff on Thursday, May 8, Leo also asked the senior clerics to renew their commitment to major Church reforms enacted by the landmark Second Vatican Council in the 1960s.
