Pasig lawmaker Roman Romulo on transforming PH education, politics

The Philippines faces a dire education crisis, and Roman Romulo is among those at the forefront of addressing it, as co-chair of the Second Congressional Commission on Education

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines is facing a dire education crisis. Studies have shown that Filipino students lag four to five years behind in expected competencies. Ten-year-olds were found unable to comprehend what they read. Teachers are forced to teach subjects they don’t specialize in.

At the forefront of addressing this crisis is the Second Congressional Commission on Education or EDCOM 2, and one of its chairpersons is Roman Romulo, Pasig City’s lone district representative. He has proposed amendments to the K to 12 program, and other measures to revitalize the country’s education system.

Romulo just won a third and final term by a landslide, as part of the Giting ng Pasig slate with Mayor Vico Sotto. He speaks with Rappler senior producer and reporter JC Gotinga about his work with EDCOM 2, and the significance of Giting’s straight victory. He also touches on the impeachment case of Vice President Sara Duterte, which the Senate has remanded to the House of Representatives.
