Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone says Kevin Quiambao will remain in the United States for at least another week in the hopes of getting more exposure from NBA teams
MANILA, Philippines – Kevin Quiambao has yet to reunite with Gilas Pilipinas as the talented forward continues his NBA pursuit.
National basketball team head coach Tim Cone on Thursday, July 10, said Quiambao will remain in the United States for at least another week in the hopes of getting more exposure from NBA teams.
“I’ve been in communication with KQ. He’s got a workout with five NBA teams on the 11th,” said Cone during the unveiling of the Nationals’ jerseys made by new official outfitter Adidas.
“On the 11th, he’s working out in front of five NBA front offices and so that will kind of dictate his schedule after that.”
Quiambao, who plays for the Goyang Sono Skygunners in the Korean Basketball League, flew to Sacramento earlier this July to train there in an attempt to land a spot for the NBA Summer League, which will run in Las Vegas from July 10 to 20.
The Summer League is where teams’ young prospects and aspiring NBA players like Quiambao get to showcase their wares.
Quiambao, though, failed to crack the Sacramento Kings’ Summer League roster despite being linked to the team owing to his Filipino connection with Jimmy Alapag, who is a player development coach for the franchise.
But it looks like the former La Salle star is not giving up on his NBA aspirations just yet.
“If he’s able to draw some interest, he might end up being in the Summer League a little bit longer,” said Cone. “If not, he’ll come back earlier. The 16th I think is his date really to come back, that’s what I understand. That’s what he’s mentioned to me.”
Cone and Gilas have already started their preparations for the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup to be staged in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in August, with the squad holding its first meeting last Monday, July 7.
With a number of national team players still busy in the PBA Philippine Cup finals, the Nationals are pressed for time as they gear up for Group D foes New Zealand, Chinese Taipei, and Iraq. – with reports from Philip Matel/Rappler.com
