Concord, NC – William Byron overcame a pit road that has the penalty kick faster and Justin Allgaier succeeded in overtime to win Saturday’s Nascar XFinity Series race on Charlotte Motor Speedway.
This is his fifth career XFinity victory and first since Phoenix in November 2017 – a team of 10 regularly starts for the cup series.
The victory comes a day after Hendrick Motorsports has announced that he has signed Byron at a contract extension by the 2029 season.
“It just felt tremendous to win here,” Byron said of his first national victory on Charlotte Motor Speedway, his hometown.
Connor Zilisch, who will start his second career cup in Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600, finishes second. It was his first race since suffering a back injury on Talladega last month.

Nick Sanchez placed the best third in the career. Allgaier, the ruling series champion, finished fourth for his ninth top five result of the season. Sammy Smith completed the top five. Dean Thompson placed sixth place to match his best series rash. Ryan Ellis placed ninth place and achieved his first top 10 final in his 144th career series.
Chase Briscoe, who starts on the pole for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600, finishes 24th in Saturday’s race.
Byron won both phases, but was asked to hit the Pit Road too fast while he hit at the end of the second phase. He worked through the field and was helped by late warnings. Allgaier did not strike when most of the field did 20 rounds from the scheduled distance. He had older tires than most, including Byron, who returned to the overtime after the overtime and led the last two rounds to win.
“When I speeded up, it caught up from there,” Byron said.
