Nascar will not commit to returning to Mexico in 2026, but ‘very hopeful’ to be back

Mexico City-Ben Kennedy, senior executive officer of the NASCAR, was non-commissioner on Sunday as the XFINITY and CUP series will return to Mexico next year, but said: “We are a lot of hope to be back here in the future.”

Sunday’s race won by New Zealand native Shane of Gisbergen Was the first cup point -meeting outside the continental United States since 1958.

Kennedy, executive vice president of the NASCAR, chief room and race innovation officer, said he was satisfied with the weekend’s events and the crowd. He noted that 44% of the crowd came from Mexico city and that 90% of the crowd came from Mexico. He did not reveal the attendance numbers for the weekend or Sunday race.

Along with the first cup race at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Thje Xfinity series returned for the first time since 2008.

“I would tell us: It is more a strategic step than a sport to expand our footprint worldwide and internationally and to a new mass fan base,” Kennedy said. “Just being in a country with 90 million people and more than 20 million people in the greater Mexico City metro alone, not in itself, is a success.”

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. ‘s comments were caught in the car after the race by Carson Hocevar’s camera.

Prior to the race, NASCAR commissioner Steve Phelps addressed competitors at the driver’s meeting and noticed the importance of the event.

“We have had several first -changing firsts over the past few years, but this one is different,” he said. ‘To chase here in Mexico City, among these passionate fans in such an impressive venue for the first time in the Nascar Cup series, is in a word, spectacular.

“We do something that will be remembered in the history of our great sport.”

While Kennedy is not committed to returning the Nascar Cup series, the sanction body is not known to go to a venue one year and then abandon it the following year if it is considered successful.

Nascar’s experiment with the collision during the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum went three years after a strong first year. The Chicago Street race, which complies with the original agreement, will hold its third cup and XFinity weekend next month. The All-Star race has been at North Wilkesboro Speedway for the past three years and some have called on the track to host a point race next year.

The Trackhouse Racing Manager achieved a dominant performance for his second Career Cup victory.

The only new track on the NASCAR schedule over the past few years that has offered the Cup series for less than three years was Road America. The date went to the Chicago Street race.

When asked why Nascar would not return to Mexico City next year, Kennedy said: “As we go through the planning of the 2026 schedule pieces, there are many dominoes to fall.”

Kennedy noted that Nascar learned a lot from keeping this opportunity. He acknowledged that not everyone went logistically well. Two Nascar-cared aircraft carrying team members to Mexico were based on Thursday, causing significant delays for team members.

Kennedy did say that if NASCAR returned, it would be “ideal to be a down a week” because of the travel challenges for teams – especially the transportation of Michigan transportation to Mexico and then returning to Charlotte, North Carolina this week before going to Pocono Raceway for this week.
