Nascar punished Sammy Smith 50 points and fined him $ 25,000 for the devastation of Taylor Gray of the lead on the last round of the Xfinity Series race in this past weekend at Martinsville Speedway.
The penalty kick drops Smith from sixth place in the points to 13th place in the points on Saturday in Darlington Raceway.
Smith entered Gray’s car from Turn 3 this past weekend, causing a multi-car accident while the field reaches the finish line.
“I thought he would have done the same to me,” Smith said after the race. “He moved me when I was headed. This is what you have to do. If you do not, you will be the one to be overwhelmed.
“I know that everyone is angry and upset about me and says that I am a dirty driver, but I don’t care because everyone does. If I would just accept it and be second today, just wouldn’t go well with me. ‘
Smith’s actions caused anger from competitors about what he did and the state of racing in the XFinity series.
Cup manager Denny Hamlin criticized the races and called on Nascar to enter the race. Hamlin wrote on social media that “Martinsville is a cut that can use a (sic)” avoidable contact “penalty. He also wrote on social media:” God, I wish I was in the (TV) booth. ID (sic) is fired, but I will surely call out these idiots. “
Xfinity winner Austin Hill said after the race: ‘I think at the end of the day when it is a green-white controlled at a Martinsville race, the respect and things are out the window and I hate to say it. I really do it. I’m probably not the best one to talk about it, but I want us to set a little more and to beat people. I wish we could run on Martinsville in a different way than we do. “
Joey Logano said on SiriusXM Nascar Radio on Tuesday about Smith’s actions on the last shot: “Go back from two car lengths back and straight on someone. Not acceptable. It’s not aggressive driving. It’s Derby. It’s unprofessional.”
