Nascar explains the rule about pitting in another team’s stall

Nascar sent an explanation to Cup, XFinity and Craftsman Truck teams on Thursday to pitch in another team’s pit stall.

The Nascar note comes after Christopher Bell stopped in teammate Chase Briscoe’s pit stall to raise a loose left wheel in last week’s race on Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Joe Gibbs Racing talked for years about what to do if a team car had to fasten a wheel after leaving his pit stall.

If the wheel came off after Bell left Pit Road, he would have penalized two rounds and suspended two pit crew members for the next two races. By stopping in Briscoe’s stall for service, Bell was only subject to the box and he just had to start in the back of the field.

Nascar sent the following to teams about the stall of another:

  • If a vehicle receives service in another team’s pit stall to correct a safety issue, the vehicle will receive a flag status penalty (restart tail of the field or passage) for the vehicle that sits outside the assigned putbox
    • Some examples of a safety issue:
      • Tighten loose wheel nuts or air nuts
      • Remove a fuel tin
      • Remove a wig key
      • Remove the jack under the vehicle
  • If a vehicle receives service in another team’s pitstall for competition adjustments, the vehicle may receive a shot (s) fine
