Mike Vrabel: Drake Maye is going to be his own person, but I’m going to give him the things necessary to win

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye showed flashes of his talent during his rookie season, but he will need to continue that development in the coming years to make New England a consistent contender.

With rumors swirling that Josh McDaniels may once again be back as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator, new coach Mike Vrabel was asked during his introductory press conference about his role in building Maye’s lead.

“My involvement will be in terms of game management, situational awareness, where we are on the football pitch, and trying Develop him as a crime boss“And when our quarterback calls the play, you want to say it like everyone thinks he’s going to score a touchdown — like with that kind of focus on how everything works,” Vrabel said.

“Drake will be his own person,” Vrabel continued. “But I will give him some things that I feel are necessary to win football games. We have to be a very efficient football team. And when you look, statistically, at what wins in the National Football League, our ability to impact the other team’s quarterback and our ability to provide An effective quarterback and passing game is a huge contributor to success and there’s a lot of ways to do that — through protecting the middle of the pocket and all those things that we’ll talk about as we go along but how we protect the football, how we’re aggressive but not anxious, and understanding where we’re at “The game, the situational awareness that I feel like I’ve developed over my six years (as head coach) and this past year in Cleveland.”

In 13 games with 12 starts as a rookie, Maye completed 66.6 percent of his passes for 2,276 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also rushed for 421 yards with two TDs.
