Mike McDonald: The offense didn’t turn out the way we expected

Seahawks coach Mike McDonald’s decision to fire offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb was the main topic of his season-ending news conference on Tuesday.

McDonald explained the decision to part ways with Grubb after one season as “a matter of alignment and vision” and was asked what has changed in that alignment since Grubb was hired last February.

“It didn’t turn out the way we expected,” McDonald said. “The direction things were going, it wasn’t the way I wanted to go.”

MacDonald did not specify exactly where things did not go as expected, but he said he wanted a physical unit that would play complementary football. He said it’s oversimplifying things to say that means he’s looking to run the ball a lot, and added that it’s “fair” to say he has a better idea of ​​what he wants heading into his second season in Seattle.

McDonald said playing experience would not be a requirement for the next offensive coordinator and said any further changes to the coaching staff would wait until a new coordinator is hired.
