the Texas-born rapper and singer She’s been a self-proclaimed “Weeb” — AKA a huge anime fan — ever since she came on the scene. In fact, she’s been advocating for nerd rights since high school.
Fortunately for anime fans,… Hot girl boss She hasn’t been shy about mastering many of her new releases in the past year.
before Megan Dropped her single “HISS” It made headlines After apparently tarnishing others in the industry with her notoriety “Megan’s Law” line. But amid all the drama, you may have missed the reference to Megan’s anime in her music video and on her social media — specifically in the 2014 series Tokyo ghoul.
In the “HISS” music video, Meg appears with white hair – just like the protagonist Tokyo ghoulKaneki Ken. Megan herself connected with the character Instagram Right before the song was released.
“Remember when Kaneki actually turned into Kaneki…yes, that’s how I feel,” Megan wrote in a comment on Instagram.
And if you are a fan Tokyo ghoulYou may have noticed another subtle reference in the “HISS” music video – Megan’s half-and-half look, which could be a reference to how Kaneki is half-human and half-ghoul.
In May 2024, I declared “BOA” — the last song before the release of her third album. Fans quickly spotted the anime references, both in Meg’s outfit and in the title of the song itself.
The slogan in BOA’s promotions says “The Curse of the Serpent Woman.”
In the music video, Meg cuts Boa Hancock’s famous Hime hair, along with her own snake wand. She even proves to be fatal to the other characters in the video, which seems perfectly in keeping with Boa Hancock and her ruthless leadership as a war princess.
This may be an exaggeration… but was that an Ace reference?
As soon as Megan’s tracklist dropped, fans immediately started talking about the possibilities of track 7. But the release of “Otaku Hot Girl” never came. Without its challenges.
Ahead of the album’s release, Megan told her fans that she had an exciting animated sample for the track. But later, in an Instagram Live before her show in Dallas, she said she ran into some problems.
She explained that an unnamed production company asked her to re-record the song on Tuesday before the album was released on Friday. The production company reportedly originally allowed Megan to use a sample from the soundtrack as well as the character names, but made a last-minute decision and asked Megan to either remove the character names from the songs or scrap the sample entirely.
But when the album was released on June 28, fans realized that “Otaku Hot Girl” contained an anime sample, and was filled with character names. Fortunately, the production company reversed their decision, and fans were able to hear the recording as Meg intended.
“Otaku Hot Girl” did not disappoint with the references. The main showing referred to is the success of 2020 Jujutsu Kaisen (JJK) – Not only did Megan experiment with the soundtrack, she also managed to get the hero’s voice actor to jump along to the song.
Itadori Yuji — JJKProtagonist – Known by many for his special moment when he is asked about his type in girls. In “Otaku Hot Girl,” dubbed voice actor Adam McArthur says the most memorable line… with a weird twist. “I like a tall woman with a nice big ass…like Grammy winner Megan Thee Stallion.”
In the song, Meg raps “Can’t Touch me, like Gojo” and “White Wig on, I’m finna go Gojo,” which are perfect references to the show’s most popular character, JoJo Satoru. He is known for his shock of white hair and the “Infinity” technique that makes him literally untouchable.
“Fighting demons in my head like I’m Itadori” and “…I bow when I go out like Sukuna” are both references to Itadori Yuuji and the spirit he possesses – the King of Curses, Ryumin Sukuna – who has a tendency to “pop” when Yuuji least expects it.
Final song JJK The ref sees Meg mentioning the strongest JJK Tech: “Because he wants to be caught expanding my domain.” Normally, you wouldn’t want to be caught scaling anyone’s scope, but for Meg? I don’t mind.
While these are all JJK References In “Otaku Hot Girl,” the song also sees Megan making a comeback Naruto Rooted, with two wonderful bars. “I won’t argue with Sasuke Avi. I’m angry, I’m a crybaby and a badass,” she raps.
“I can’t be like me with Sasuke’s Sharingan,” Meg stated, referring to Sasuke’s Sharingan technique being able to copy any jutsu. And then my personal favorite: “Exciting technique, feel like Naruto,” where she refers to the wild fox protagonist himself.
And it’s not just Meg’s album releases where she references her favorite performances; She also made many references in some of her most famous works.
In April, Megan hopped on the track with everyone’s favorite rising Memphis star – Gloriella. Meg’s verse included a clip of fans talking.
“I’m the female giant, trampling whores. I’m showing my tits, I’m tearing up the city.
“Blue hair like Bulma, Big Chi-Chi.”
It also showed cheerful At the Crunchyroll Awards, which was perfect when they announced the winner of Anime of the Year – which of course went to JJK Season 2.
And so on JJBA The girls (and Bruno) made sure to pay tribute to Thee Magical Girls as well, and explore Amsterdam Dressed as Sailor Moonas well as strutting around Seoul in a pair of Sailor Moon Jimmy Choos (I’m not jealous aaaalll).
There’s nothing I enjoy more than seeing an authentically nerdy Meg. I love that she is never shy about showing her interests. I can’t wait to see what 2025 brings for her.
My personal favorite anime reference that Meg made this year? Thanks for asking! It should be “BOA” – hair, snakes. It’s very big. LMK to you in the comments below.
