Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg knocked out the giant tech rival the apple for poor innovation efforts and “random rules” in a lengthy podcast interview on Friday.
“On the one hand, (the iPhone) has been great because almost everyone in the world now has a phone, and that’s what makes amazing things possible,” Zuckerberg said in an episode of the show. “The Joe Rogan Experience.” “But on the other hand… they’ve used that platform to set a lot of rules that I think feel arbitrary and (I) feel like they haven’t come up with anything great in a while. It’s like Steve Jobs came up with the iPhone, and now they’re sitting 20 years later.” .
Zuckerberg added that he was thinking iPhone sales were struggling as consumers take longer to upgrade their phones because the new models aren’t major improvements over previous iterations.
“So how are they making more money as a company? Well, basically they’re doing it by squeezing people, and, as you’re saying, having that 30% tax on developers, getting them to buy more peripherals and stuff. Connect,” Zuckerberg said. “You know, they build things like Air Pods, which are cool, but they’ve completely hindered anyone else’s ability to build something that can connect to the iPhone in the same way.”
According to Zuckerberg, Apple defends itself against pushback from other companies by saying it does not want to infringe on consumer privacy and security. But he said the problem would be solved if Apple fixed its protocol, building in better security and using encryption.
“It’s not secure because you didn’t create security. And now you’re using that to argue that only your product can connect easily,” Zuckerberg said.
Zuckerberg said that if Apple stopped applying its “random rules,” Meta’s profits would double.
He also fired shots Apple’s Vision Pro headphoneswhich had disappointing US sales. Meta sells its own virtual headset called Meta Quest.
“I think Vision Pro is one of the biggest changes to try something new,” Zuckerberg said. “And I don’t want to give them too much time, because we do a lot of things where the first version isn’t so good, and you want to judge the third version. But I mean, V1, it definitely didn’t hit it out of the park.”
“I heard it’s great for watching movies,” he added.
Apple did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
