Officials sent off Joan Jennings in the first half on Sunday. It robbed him of the opportunity to reach 1,000 receiving yards.
Jennings was penalized for consecutive plays for obstructing Cardinals defensive backs Starling Thomas and Sean Murphy-Bunting on successive plays. Thomas and Murphy-Ponting were also penalized, and Jennings and Murphy-Ponting were disqualified.
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that he had no idea why Jennings was fired.
“I know Juwan blows the final whistle every game,” Shanahan said. “I know you usually get kicked out for throwing a punch. I haven’t seen one, and he didn’t tell me he threw a punch. So that’s something we’ll have to figure out.”
Jennings received some vindication this week because the AFL did not fine Jennings and instead fined Thomas and Murphy-Ponting.
Thomas will pay $5,083 and Murphy-Ponting will lose $11,817.
