Jharrel Jerome talks role models and the new film “Unstoppable”

I liked that you said that you grow with each role, that you tap into new feelings, new memories, or even create new realities. With this role in particular, Anthony Robles’ story is very inspiring, what part of his story inspired you the most?

Jarrell: I would say his willpower, his mental drive. The reason we’re inspired by him is not just because he won, but because of how incredibly hard-working he was and how he persevered through everything. I can’t complain about anything anymore, like I’m too tired and don’t want to go to the gym, I think about Anthony. I’m thinking, “Well, will I be tired and go to the gym?” He might be tired but he’ll still be there. I trained with him for seven months, five days a week. I saw his persistence and determination and I just want to take that and apply it to all aspects of my life. That kind of determination, that persistence, that willpower, and the idea that I’m truly unstoppable.

And that was also a space where you could always overcome what society told you, that you had to be in that box.

Jarrell: exactly.

So how do you make sure you live your life beyond the expectations of what society expects of you as a young black man?

Jarrell: Just stick to my word. Believe in me first. I have a lot of crutches in my life, my mother, my friends, and even people on my team that I really care about and trust, but at the end of the day, I have to trust me first. This sounds a little selfish, but it has allowed me to be selective and enables you to compliment me the way you did at the beginning and say like “bang, bang, bang” – I said that being selective and saying no can be risky. Life goes on, finances and all that stuff is there, so it’s a risky game to say ‘no, no, no’ but because I believe in myself, it allows me to be in a room like this at the right times and in the right places. , so I just like to stick to my word. This seems like an arrogant answer.

Not real!

Jarrell: Oh okay!

If you don’t trust and believe in yourself, who will trust and believe in you? You have to be your own number one fan before you get another fan.
