‘I’m not rushing back’: Scottie Scheffler unsure of Pebble Beach status

Scottie Scheffler is still unsure if he will play in next week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am as he continues to recover from right hand surgery.

Scheffler, who virtually joined media day for the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Monday morning, said he has not yet decided whether he will make his season debut at Pebble Beach, adding that while he “feels good,” he expects to know in “the next couple of days by the week.”

The commitment deadline for Pebble is Friday night.

“I just want to make sure I’m getting back to normal, progressing the right way in my recovery,” Scheffler said. “I’m definitely anxious to get back, excited to get back, but I’m also not going to rush back just to get back.”

The world No. 1, who won nine world titles last year, suffered a stab wound from broken glass while preparing Christmas dinner and required surgery to remove shards of glass from his hand. Scheffler said Monday that he makes homemade ravioli. Initially, Scheffler expected to be out three to four weeks before returning to 100%, according to a statement released by his manager Blake Smith last month, though Scheffler was not ready to return at last week’s American Express and he had to retire to “give his injury more time to heal.”

Scheffler said he took two weeks off from all golf activities after the surgery to make sure the wound healed properly, just working on his lower body.

“It was pretty unusual for me not being able to do much in the weight room,” Scheffler said. “I was still able to go in there and do some moves and some of the things I usually do with my legs, but as far as my upper body, I’m not going to go and work out just the left side of my body and go into the season walking like this (leaning to the right). “

Although Scheffler preferred not to go into too much detail about his arm and recovery — he declined to answer a question about when he started hitting golf balls — a video surfaced last weekend showing Scheffler practicing and catching the club with his right hand. which was wrapped.

It’s an improvement over not being able to brush your teeth.

“Sometimes you don’t realize how uncoordinated you are until you have to brush your teeth with your left hand,” said Scheffler, who added that he didn’t even try to change a diaper with one hand.

Scheffler has not competed since the Dec. 18 match with Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau. His last tournament was the Hero World Challenge, which he won in early December. He’s had long competitive layoffs before, but usually plays socially during those breaks. Last month, he got to watch some of his tournaments from last season, a rare moment of reflection for Scheffler.

“I went back to sitting and putting my arm up after surgery, I was just sitting there, watching some old footage, watching some old tournaments, and I was thinking a little bit,” Scheffler said. “Not much, but I really wanted to push my memory and since I couldn’t play golf, I tried to almost practice a little bit at home to remind my brain what I feel during certain shots, what my hands are like on the club, things like that, so I haven’t checked out of golf completely.”
