Vikings still decide whether to keep the attacker by Darnold, even if they do not plan to apply franchise tags before 16:00 and today. Should you keep Darnold or move on?
On the one hand, Darnold went 14-3 last year as the starter in the regular season, and one and done in the playoffs. Through 17 weeks, he dramatically exceeded any reasonable expectations, making big throws in big spots and gets some great victories.
Then came no. 272. Vikings on the lions. The winner gets a seed number 1. The loser must take a harder path in the postseason.
It was the largest game of the regular season, as well as the largest game of Darnold’s life. As it turned out, it was too big. He got a sudden case of vision.
Then came the playoffs. That loss was not on it. Vikings were outdated. And many of the players (especially in a misdemeanor) lacking the necessary intensity needed to advance in the win-ili-go-go-go-go-go setting.
Things that passed well before 18. Weeks have greatly helped in the circumstances. Rookie’s first round JJ McCarthy suffered the preseason knee injury, and Vikings was smoking for the whole season. Darnold became unquestionable, wire and wire driver, no reason to look over shoulder after a bad decision or a bad target throwing.
It will be different this year. McCarthy will be ready. If Darnold is fighting at all, he will start knocking for JJ and Yips that did not appear until 18. Weeks could arrive long before.
Of course, this assumes that McCarthy is still there. If Vikings are signed by Darnold in a contract that is a two-year commitment, McCarthy could try to enter the NFL version of the portal transmission.
The ultimate question becomes satisfying whether the Vikings are pleased – and possibly make a quick way to play – with a guy who has already shown that the greatest phase is too big or want to see something special in McCarthy.
Basically, enough is good enough to be good enough?
For many from the outside, it is a brain without a brain. Look at what a child can do and save money for other positions of need.
