Concord, NC-Te midst of screaming on the radio after winning the Coca-Cola 600, Ross Chastain had a message for his team.
“Thank you for working all night,” he said.
The longest race of the Nascar Cup season was preceded by one of the longest evenings of the year for Chastain’s team after crashing his primary car in practice on Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday.
“This group of guys I have is relentless,” said crew head Phil Surgen. “There was no doubt that everyone was going to put every bit of effort. We had shop guys who were at concerts and ball games, and everything just what they do came into the store. ‘
About 33 hours after a tire blew into practice and sent Chastain’s car into the wall, he celebrated his first Coca-Cola 600 victory with a burnout, reverse victory shot, watermelon-smash and a trip to the plots to share part of the watermelon with fans.
Originally, the plan was to correct the car -chastain that was destroyed. Teams cannot go to a backup car unless Nascar allows. As more damage was uncovered in the car, Nascar approved the team to go to a backup.
Normally, teams would have a backup car on the track, but with most of the race stores near Charlotte Motor Speedway – Trackhouse races are 6.8 miles away – the vehicles were at the race stores.
The team loaded Chastain’s ruined car into the track to go to the store. Trackhouse team members followed and began to convert what the backup car was for this weekend’s race in Nashville in Chastain’s car for Charlotte.
The team had to transfer the engine of the primary car to what Chastain would chase. On the inside of the car worked there. They changed the transaxle. Adjustments to the suspension have been made. The team had to scale the car to make sure it was within Nascar’s tolerances. The car had to be wrapped with all the bail logos to fit the primary car.
Chastain was part of the radio broadcast for Saturday’s Xfinity Race and returned to the store after the race. He stayed until about 22:00 before he was told to go 600 kilometers of racing the next day and rest.
Team members were there until around 2:30 and returned at 05:30 to work on the car.
It was only around 12:30 that the team completed the car and was loaded into a truck to transport to Charlotte car Speedway. Team members went to the track and sent the car

The garage opened for crew members at 14:00 and teams could do certain car checks with the car. After it was done and the car was pressed to the grid on Pit Road, car head David Fero had a few moments for himself.
“I just sat outside (the team’s truck) on a cooler and took a moment for myself in silence,” he said. “Just needed to get my mind together. You build a car in that timeframe, you are exhausted.
‘There are many components. We are quite disciplined when it comes to checklists and processes, and all of this, but at that moment you sometimes push it aside and do just what needs to be done.
“An hour before the race you just sit there, and do a spiritual checklist in your head. You think of the engine, you think of the floor, you think of the back, everyone else and just take a moment to be ready for the race because it’s long, 600 miles. It can be really grueling. ‘
When he was standing in Victory Lane next to the car, Fero admits: “I’m slightly exhausted now because I didn’t sleep.”
Although each of Trackhouse Racing’s other eight Cup victories is important for various reasons, Sunday was special for the team owner Justin Marks for what the team overcome to win his first cup –crown Jewel event.
“The first day before everyone stood by everyone with this organization that I took ownership of it at the end of 2021, and I said: You know, we have everything we need to be successful here,” Marks said. “We just have to work together. We must believe in each other, and we must fundamentally believe that we can do this, that we can win big races and compete for championships. If we support each other and go the extra mile and do what is needed, we can get there.
“I think the weekend was a beautiful expression of it, and I’m so … incredibly proud of everyone, because what they did this weekend was very, very, very difficult. It was truly a team victory. ‘
