Gone but not forgotten, Muhammad ‘The Great’ Ali would have celebrated his 83rd birthday today if he were still alive.
Ali was more than the greatest heavyweight champion, winning the world record three times! He was a great humanitarian.
Ali has done more for boxing than anyone can imagine. In the year 1960 Olympic lightweight gold medal in Rome, Italy Six rounds into Liston’s refusal to get off the stool, he suffered a shoulder injury. The fights were then: 57-57, 59-56 and 56-58.
Earlier, after British and Commonwealth champion Henry Cooper 27-8-1 went off the canvas in the fourth round, Alli’s trainer Angelo Dundee was told to deliver another coup by cutting Allin’s glove. Alli finished at 2:15 a.m. in the next round at Wembley Stadium in London, United Kingdom.
Before that, he defeated Doug Jones 21-3-1, 8-1 and 5-4 twice in New York’s Madison Square Garden in one of his closest fights to date. In the year In 1973, I met Ali at his home in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, when he came from another class, stupidly asking, “When are you going to give it to Doug Jones?” I asked him. Then he invited me back to where he was.
I sat next to Allie at the Deer Lake, PA, camp and asked, “Why are you fighting all these dudes?” I mean, it might be another four years. Even as an Army vet I had all the respect in the world for him.
After refusing to go into the military in the 60s, years later he brought back 15 American hostages from Iraq.
In the year He finished his career in December 1981 with a 56-5 record with 37 wins. In his last fight, only Larry ‘The Easton Assassin’ Holmes stood. Ferdy Pacheco, who was cut at the time, left the corner saying he was medically unfit to continue. “Ali’s kidneys were collapsing,” said Dr. Nardillo of the New York commission. This was after a 54-5-1 win against the mighty Ernie Shavers at Madison Square Garden in September 1977.
Ali lost to 1976 Olympic gold medalist Leon Spink 6-0-1. “Losing Leon Spinks hurt more than any fight I’ve ever lost in boxing. I wasn’t properly trained. He regained the title in a rematch in front of 60,000 fans at the Superdome in New Orleans, LA. That would be his last victory.
A week earlier it was the birthday of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, who gave Allie a long silk white gown with a “People’s Choice” on the back in Las Vegas. “He should have been called the People’s Champion later,” said Ali. Elvis met Ali two years before his death, he wanted to visit him at Deer Lake Camp, he didn’t want anyone to know that he was coming to spend time together. When he left, Ali said, “Elvis Presley was the most humble man I ever met. What a nice guy. “
“I beat him for six rounds; in the seventh, he hit him in the side, fell on my ear, and that’s all, George?” Ali defeated champion ‘Big’ George Foreman 40-0 in Zaire, adding, “It was bigger than boxing!”
“Iron,” Mike Tyson once said, “Cus (D’Amato, his trainer) and Ali had the same birthday.” He first met Ali when Ali was visiting him at a reform school. After Ali was defeated by Holmes, he exclaimed, “I’m going to present him to you!” he said.
It was January 22, 1988 at the Convention Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Calling future President Donald J. Trump was next to Ali. As they entered the ring, Ali Holmes slapped their gloves and walked over to Tyson and whispered in Tyson’s ear, “Kick my ass!” it has. At 2:55 of the fourth round, he’s down for the third time, and Holmes is on his back!
Ali passed away in June 2016 at the age of 74.
