Here’s a look at the good news and bad news for Cup teams heading to Cota.
23xi Racing – Good news: Bubba Wallace was tied up with Joey Logano for second place in the series with 28 stage points by the first two points races. … Tyler Reddick is one of three drivers (Alex Bowman and Ross Chastain are the other two) that ends in the top -10 in all four Cota races. … Reddick scored 160 points last year, most of any manager, on road courses. … RILEY HERBST finished 17th in both races this year. Bad news: Wallace failed to finish three of his four races at Cota. … Wallace started three top 10 finishes in 32 roadway.
Pre -drive Motorport – Good News: Todd Gilliland finished in the Top 10 in two of the last four road tracks. … Zane Smith won two craftsmen truck racing in three. Bad news: Noah Gragson started the season 28th (Daytona 500) and 34th (Atlanta) due to accidents.
Haas Factory Team – Good News: Cole Custer’s best finish on a roadway is ninth, which he started twice in the 16 career cup. Bad news: Custer has not finished better than 23rd in two cups at Cota.
Hendrick Motorsports – Good News: Hendrick Motorsports has won five of the last six away races. … William Byron has won the pole for the last two races at Cota. … Byron won the Cota race last year. … Alex Bowman’s average finish at Cota is 4.25, his best on all tracks. … Kyle Larson has six wins in the road, which is fourth on the list of all time. … Chase Elliott has seven wins in the cup in the cup, to be third on the list of all time and to lead all active drivers. … Elliott has the best average finish on road courses (9.14) among active cup managers. Bad news: Elliott is the only current Hendrick driver who did not win a roadway in the next Gen’s car (since 2022).
Hyak Motorsports – Good News: Ricky Stenhouse jr. Finished fifth this past weekend in Atlanta. Bad news: Stenhouse finished 22nd or worse in three of his four cups at Cota.
Joe Gibbs Racing – Good News: Christopher Bell’s Win of Atlanta was his first and the organization’s first since New Hampshire in June last year. … Bell has two top three finishes at Cota, including a runner-up result last year. … The appeal of fines to chase Briscoe and his Daytona team from Daytona is on March 5 … Ty Gibbs started four top five finals in his last seven Road Course. Bad news: Bell has two finishes of the 30th or worse at Cota. … Denny Hamlin has one top 10 final in the last 17 Road Course races. … Briscoe started one top -10 in his last seven road course.
Kaulig Racing – Good News: All three AJ Allmender’s Cup victories came on road courses. … Allmender started two top -10s in four Cota. … Allmender started five top -10s in his last seven cup lane. Bad news: Ty Dillon has never started better than 15th place in the 25 cup track.
Legacy Motor Club – Good News: John Hunter Nemechek is one of the two drivers ending in the top -10 in both races this season (Ryan Blaney is the other). … Nemechek is seventh in points. Bad news: Nemechek has never started better than the 21st place in seven career Cup. … Erik Jones has no top -10’s in his last 12 road course.
Richard Childress Racing – Good News: Kyle Busch finished in the top 10 in three of the four Cota races, including a runner-up in 2023. Bad news: Austin Dillon has never finished better than the 10th in a roadway in 39.
Rick True Racing – Good News: Cody Ware’s best finish at Cota is 25th in 2023. Bad news: True is one of only two drivers (Josh Berry is the other) who failed to complete both races this year.
RFK Racing – Good News: Chris Buescher has 13 top-10 finishes on road courses in the next gen era to lead all drivers. … Buescher finished eighth in each of the last two races at Cota. … Ryan Preece’s best end point in three starts at Cota is 15th. Bad news: Brad Keselowski is Winless in 48 Career Cup Road Course. … Keselowski enters 33rd in points over the weekend after finishes of 26th (Daytona 500) and 39th (Atlanta).
Spire Motorsports – Good News: Carson Hcevar ended a best career last weekend in Atlanta. … Michael McDowell is the only driver who is not involved in an accident in the first two races of the season. … McDowell lost six rounds for repairs at Atlanta, but got a six free pass from the record and finished 13th. … Justin Haley’s best endpoint on a roadway was second in 2023 in Chicago. Bad news: McDowell did not finish better than the 12th in the last three Cota races.
Team Penske – Good News: Austin Cindric is first in the series with 30 phase points through the first two points meetings of the season. … Cindric has eight top -10s on road courses in the next Genera, most among the team Penske drivers. … Joey Logano led a series-high 126 rounds this past season. … Ryan Blaney is one of the two drivers who end up in the top -10 in both races this season (John Hunter Nemecheek is the other). Bad news: Blaney started one top -10 in four at Cota. … Joey Logano started one win in the 50 Career Cup and the win came to Watkins Glen in 2015.
Trackhouse Racing – Good News: Ross Chastain, who won the 2022 race at Cota, has an average finish of 4.0 on this roadway, the best of all drivers. … Connor Zilisch, who is 18 years old, makes his cup debut. … Shane van Gisbergen won three away races in the XFINITY series last year and won his cup debut in 2023 during the Chicago Street race.
