as if Boxing news – 01/17/2025 – Comments WBA/WBO cruiserweight champion Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez (47-1, 30 KOs) has been ordered by the WBA to defend against mandatory Yunel Dorticos (27-2, 25 KOs) in his next fight. Dorticos, a 38-year-old Cuban who has fought just three times in the past four years, has earned a mandatory spot in the World Boxing Association by defeating relatively low-profile opponents. A fighter is not suitable to hold the #1 slot, but the cruiserweight division is not capable. Dorticos is one of the few good fighters in this weight class, and he’s not young. Integration is delayed. Ramirez plans to fight unification with the IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaya It must be made to last. He has to wait until he gets this fight against Dorticos. If Ramirez’s promoters at Golden Boy want to go that route, there could always be a step-aside deal. It’s too bad the IBF didn’t use former WBA champion Arsene Golamyrian as the enforcer, but that doesn’t make any sense either, given Ramirez won by unanimous decision on March 30 last year in 12 rounds. Still, this is far better than fighting an inactive Dorticos.
