Former England spinner Monty Panesar believes India’s one-man coach formula does not work for all formats Gautam Gambhir After losing six Test matches as head coach. Since Gambhir replaces Rahul Dravid in July 2024, the Indian cricket team’s performance has been shaky.
They suffered in the first ODI Series They were unbeaten by Sri Lanka since 1997 and shockingly were whitewashed 3-0 at home in the Test series by New Zealand. Adding to the woes, India lost the Test series 3-1 to Australia and lost the Border-Gavaskar trophy after a decade.
However, the Men in Blue are unbeaten in T20I cricket, have won all six matches under new coach Gambhir, but are yet to win an ODI match, and now all eyes will be on the upcoming three-match ODI series at home to India. 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
Although Gambhir has had successful spells as a T20 consultant with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and defending IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). As captain, the former India batsman won two IPL titles, and played crucial roles in India’s T20 and ODI World Cup triumphs in 2007 and 2011 respectively.
But his Test numbers have not been good in Australia and England and now India’s Test performance has highlighted its weakness in red-ball cricket, leading many to suggest that the BCCI should have separate coaches for white-ball and Test cricket. Groups.
Well, Monty Pansar had advocated the idea of having separate coaches for the Indian cricket team for white ball and red ball cricket. Coaching all the three teams feels very difficult for Gautam Gambhir, and while playing with them, he may face the orders of senior players.
“I think so,” Monty Pansar was quoted as saying by the Times of India. I think it’s a good option. I think maybe the workload is too much for Gambhir…he has now turned into a coach. Sometimes you say to some veteran players, ‘Well, I was his teammate a few years ago; Now he is telling us how to play cricket.’ It can be difficult, that transition, and his track record (as a batsman) is not good either in Australia or in England.
In Australia, Gambhir scored just 181 runs at an average of 22.62 in four Tests, while in England he scored 127 runs at an average of 12.70 in five away matches. Such figures do not suit the coach of the Test team, and now the BCCI should hand over the role of Test coach to VVS Laxman, Panesar said.

The former England spinner said that Gambhir’s Test numbers are not that good and he is challenging him to command respect in the Indian dressing room. Legends like VVS Laxman command respect and authority naturally with proven success in all situations.
Panesar continued, “I think the selectors will be thinking: is Gambhir taking him seriously as a coach or should he just focus on ODIs and T20Is and maybe bring in someone like VVS Laxman (eg Test coach). )? Or bring him in as a batting coach to help Gambhir. He resembles Rahul Dravid. It was successful in all cases. I think you need some kind of Indian legend who has done a good job in all situations to come in as a coach because you naturally command that respect.
He concluded: “You hear Laxman say, ‘You don’t play up when you swing the ball, don’t you?’ But with Gambhir, I’m not sure if they really take him seriously, or if they’re saying, ‘OK, yes, we’ll listen to him, but we’ll go and play our natural game.’ “
