Ennis v. Stanionis has his sights set on Welterweight Unification on April 12 in Atlantic City

IBF welterweight champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis (33-0, 29 KOs) is said to be finalizing a unification fight against WBA belt holder Imantas Stanionis (15-1, 9 KOs) on April 12 on a Matchroom-promoted show on DAZN. Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Ring Ennis vs Stanionis reports that it is almost over. However, because there aren’t many boxing events these days, it’s an unusual place to hold a fight in Atlantic City. It would make more sense for the fight to take place in Boots’ hometown of Philadelphia, but given how bad he looked in his last fight against Karen Chukadchian, it’s probably best to have it in Atlantic City.

Undisputed search of Ennis

Boots took a lot of flak from fans after turning down a fight against Virgil Ortiz Jr. at 154 and staying at 147 to continue working on his goal of becoming the undisputed welterweight champion.

Ennis, 27, has the right promoter Eddie Hearn to make his dream come true, but it still looks like a waste. The three champions Jaro should have won, Stanyonnis, Mario Barrios and Brian Norman Jr., are not household names in America.

Terence Crawford’s popularity increased when he defeated Errol Spence to become the undisputed welterweight champion in 2023, but he was a star. Boots won’t have that because the three champions he’s fighting are completely unknown to casual fans.

Boots under fire

On top of all that, Ennis made things worse for himself by turning down a career-high payday to challenge Virgil Ortiz Jr. for the WBC interim junior middleweight title on the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitri Bivol 2 card in Riyadh on Feb. 22.

That event will be shown on DAZN PPV, and it could be. Perfect vehicle For Ennis to increase his star power in just one fight. Beating Virgil Jr. would have done more to turn Ennis into a world star than it would have made him the undisputed champion at 147, winning three lesser-known titles. Is it fear on the part of Ennis? Or his lack of interest in turning down a fight with Virgil Ortiz Jr.?
