Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson tore his Achilles again and underwent surgery Thursday to repair it a second time, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reports. Watson could miss the entire 2025 season, adding to the urgency of the Browns’ quarterback search.
General manager Andrew Berry said earlier this week that Watson had a setback in his rehab, which was revealed in a season-ending examination. An MRI later revealed a new tear.
Watson originally tore his right Achilles tendon on Oct. 20.
It ended his season for the second straight year after Watson missed the final eight games of 2023 following shoulder surgery. Watson has started just 19 games since the Browns traded three first-round picks to give him a fully guaranteed $230 million contract before the 2022 season.
The Browns owe Watson $46 million each of the next two seasons, with his shots at a maximum of $72.9 million in 2025 and 2026.
The trade will go down as one of — if not the — worst in NFL history.
The Browns could select a quarterback with the second overall pick.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson is the only other quarterback under contract through 2025. Jameis Winston becomes an unrestricted free agent in his season and Bailey Zappe will be a restricted free agent.
