Denny Hamlin has ended a winless 19 racing streak on his home state lane, and he has a furious challenge by Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell to win to win on Martinsville Speedway.
Bell finished second with 4.617 seconds, and Bubba Wallace was third when Toyota drivers swept the top three places. Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson rounded off the top five.
It was ten years and a day since Hamlin’s previous win on the 0.526 mile oval in Virginia, a few hours from where he grew up in the Richmond suburb of Chesterfield.
Hamlin leads active NASCAR CUP series of six wins in Martinsville, but on Sunday his first checkered flag was on the 0.526-mile Oval in southwest Virginia since March 29, 2015. Hamlin was a regular contender for his drought in 19 races in Martinsville, with 10 top fives.
After a result of pit problems during the first six races this season (documented In this story by NBC Sports’ Dustin Long), Josh Berry became the latest victim during the first phase in Martinsville.
Berry’s no. 21 Ford is in the left by Bubba Wallace’s no. 23 Toyota hit as he went out the pits during the second caution of the race. Berry’s car stopped 2 in turn and then lost two rounds for repairs.
It was a difficult break for Berry, which led 40 rounds by staying on track during the first yellow. He still managed to lead the most rounds for Wood Brothers in Martinsville Speedway since Nascar Hall of Famer David Pearson led 180 round on April 29, 1973. It was the most recent win for the team in his hometown just east of its origin in Stuart, Virginia.
Wood Brothers Racing was honored on Sunday morning with a proclamation of the General Assembly of Virginia, in honor of the team’s 75th anniversary.
