Dan Campbell was about to lose both coordinators, “can’t let that” derail the team

The end of every season brings change, but some changes are more significant than others and the Lions are set for a few big departures in the near future.

Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn interviewed for head coaching jobs during the team’s bye week to open the postseason and both are considered good bets to move on. During Monday’s press conference, head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged that reality.

“I would have expected to lose both, but I wasn’t told anything,” Campbell said. “I have a feeling, but I’m ready to lose both.”

Campbell said it would “absolutely” hurt the team to lose Johnson and Glenn and he would be “forever grateful” for their contributions, but that the Lions “can’t let” those changes derail what they’ve built over the last few years. several years. Campbell said he was confident they would “find the next, best guys for us.”

“We have guys on staff who are more than qualified to be outstanding in those roles, but that doesn’t mean I’m not looking outside, too,” Campbell said. “I want what I believe to be as close as possible to what we were. We do not lose what interests us and our identity. We will stay true to who we are.”

Campbell said he won’t be in a frenzy to install new coordinators and said quarterback Jared Goff will have input on the offensive end to ensure there is as little turnover as possible for a team that still believes its championship window is wide open.
