Daytona Beach, Fla. – Dale Earnhardt jr. On Wednesday morning, Dale Earnhardt jr. With a full moon overhead and the sun still renovated the horizon and watched while JR Motorsports’ first cup car was dropped off in the Daytona International Speedway garage.
Earnhardt pulls out his phone to capture the moment. Car owner Rick Hendrick encouraged him to do so.
When JR Motorsports – which competed for the first time in the XFinity series in 2005 – announced on January 15 that he would have his first cup entry and tried to qualify for the Daytona 500 with Justin Allgaier, Earnhardt promised to be there when the garage first opened.
Fourteen hours after walking with his crew and the number 40 car to the garage stall of the team on Wednesday morning, Earnhardt mixed in the crowd on Pit Road and melted away after Allgaier missed it to a place in the Daytona 500 with eight one hundredth of a second to get.
“I think he’s a little bowel now,” Kelley Earnhardt said about her brother Dale after she qualified.
One of nine non-carational cars enrolled is no guarantee that Earnhardt’s car will be on the timetable for Sunday’s Daytona 500.
Everything is not lost. Allgaier gets another chance to make the 500 in Thursday’s qualifying races.
About 45 minutes after Martin Truex jr. And Jimmie Johnson secured the two qualifying places for non-controlled cars and forced Allgaier to wait another night to find out if he would be in the 500, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Uplifting message on social media.
‘Damn, it was nice to include tonight. But we have to come back tomorrow and participate in a double in the Daytona 500. The dream lives out. “
Kelley said about what the team is facing: “(Thursday) just worries me because everything is not under our control.”
This is always the case in setting up tracks. An error that lies a few rows ahead can lead to an accident that finds out several cars. It can change who makes Daytona 500 this year.
But as the third fastest of the nine non-cartered cars, Allgaier has several ways to make the Daytona 500. If he finishes the highest among the non-carational cars in his race, he is in the field. If Johnson or Martin Truex Jr. ends the highest among non-carational cars in their qualifying race, is Allgaier in the Daytona 500.
Allgaier is scheduled to start 17th under 23 cars in the first qualifying race (19:00 ET Thursday on FS1). The other non-carational cars in his race are: Truex (from 12th), Helio CastroneVes (20th), Chandler Smith (22nd) and JJ Yeley (23rd).
Still, Allgaier came within 0.08 seconds that he didn’t have to worry about Thursday’s qualifying races. Where does the difference come from a 2.5 mile track?
“When I look at the (data), it almost seems as if we may have caught a little wind on the front, maybe we have delayed ourselves,” Allgaier told NBC Sports.
Allgaier then started looking forward.
“You can’t hang over the hassle today,” he said, “because you still have the chance to get it (Thursday).”
The result of Wednesday gives Dale Earnhardt jr. Another day to enjoy – as a cup owner – all that Daytona is.
“Most motor owner does not think that this could be the only time they do,” Earnhardt told NBC Sports last week about his desire to be in the garage, on the qualifying network and the car and team as much as possible at Daytona.
“Just for the case that we never get back into that situation or the opportunity to enter a cup of cot, I want to make sure that there is nothing about it that has passed me, or that I could not experience.
“I miss it all. I miss it as a manager. Arriving at Daytona, how good is our car? I watch the guys compile it for three months.
“How are we going to qualify? How’s it going to run? If you stand on that timetable, stand out in that series to qualify in Daytona, it’s just a special moment and awaits your opportunity to go and wait for your opportunity to get in.
“It’s one of the wonderful things to be a participant, whether you are the driver, crew or the motor owner, you are a participant. I miss, I miss the emotions you go through, the highs, lows, the anxiety of achievement, and will we manage? Shall we come in? “
He will find out on Thursday night.
