39%? For Switzerland, it is a huge shock, and is worse than the worst case. These are the highest tariffs in Europe.

Worldwide, the fourth highest, Syria, Laos and Myanmar alone, even if the President will continue to track the threat of its 50% tariff threat to the top of Brazil.

Friday is a story that dominates news and air waves. A newspaper, Blick, had the greatest bankruptcy of the country in the Battle of Marigno in 1515.

A few weeks ago, the Swiss government was creating confidence.

In May, the meeting between the US and China, in Geneva, to avoid the commercial war between Swiss economic superpotives, President Swiss Karin Keller-Sutter received a meeting with the Secretary of the US Commerce.

Smiled out. He said, he said, in Switzerland, it is likely to receive a trade agreement with Washington. 10%, he said, was a tempting tariff offer, Donald Trump had less than 31% in April in the day of his “liberation day”.

Now, these excitement shrinks. A few hours before the first period of August, a final call between Mrs. Keller-Sutter and President Trump did not give anything. There were later hours that the fares came by 31% were originally threatened, but a sentence of 39%.

Why? Some Swiss politicians are already arguing that Swiss negotiation tactics did not violate, but some say very hard, others say too much. The reality can be more direct: Trump was looking forward to making great deals, and Switzerland is not so great. It is now not clearly discussed that Switzerland trading negotiators could have had with US members.

Adhesive, the Swiss government says now is the trade deficit with the US.

Trump sees trade deficits. When a country sells more to the United States, as a problem for the US, even though economists have a lot of shared vision. The Rate believes that it can help protect the US manufacturing sector in decades because they lost their jobs to foreign companies.

The US Swiss Trade Deficit was 47.4 trillion in 2024, although if you include the services industries, which is comfortable, the deficit decreases $ 22 trillion. Switzerland sells more (especially drugs, gold jewelry, watches and machine tools) than to the US.

To try to compensate this, the Swiss government reduced rates in U.S. industrial, and some Swiss companies (Nestle, Novartis) invested in US plants. Switzerland is already in the US of the US 6. The largest investor is created, Swiss, 400,000 jobs.

But balancing deficit is impossible. The Swiss population is just 9 million, many of which do not want to buy US products. Gaszling gas cars are too large for alpine roads, US cheese and chocolate … well, let’s say that they are not really Swiss flavor.

Jan Attserlander, the head of the foreign trade in the economyasuissus representing the company, told the Swiss emission: “We need reliable relationships with the United States”.

One of the most important Swiss export markets One of the most important commercial markets has taken a trade policy, the business of businesses needed.

So what can Switzerland do now? There is a small option window, until August 7, when fares come into force. Until then, the Swiss government will try to negotiate fever. Swiss businesses are not warning thousands of job losses, if 39% can be reduced.

But it’s hard to see what the wiggle room is.

With investment promises, and zero rates, which he already offered everything he could in Switzerland. Now only a single tactic would be punitive – withdrawn the investment offer, into mutual tariffs, and the nuclear chance, the Switzerition request to cancel the US F35 Fighter Plans.

During Switzerland, there is confusion – and anger.

Friday is the National Swiss Day, the equivalent of July 4th. After giving his traditional lecture, Karin Keller-Sutter Swiss President asked about US fares.

Journalists said the talks with the US went well, but for Donald Trump, the trade deficit was an obstacle. The inference was that President of the US was a problem.

Instead of nationalist nationalist celebrations, Swiss feel they are punishing for being one of the most competitive and most innovative countries in the world.

Others say the country believes he has been faced, and will be able to use this innovation to survive.
