Coco Gough won the United Cup for the second time in 3 years beating Iga Suitek again

SYDNEY — Coco Gough defeated second-ranked Iga Suatek 6-4, 6-4 in the opening singles match of the United Cup mixed team tennis event as the United States advanced to the final with a 2-0 win over Poland.

Taylor Fritz beat Hubert Hurkaz 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (4) at Kane Rosewall Arena as the Americans secured their second United Cup title in three years.

“It’s great to win a team event, the only team event I’ve won, so I’m really excited,” said third-ranked Goff.

The 20-year-old American has won all of her singles matches at the United Cup in straight sets, an ideal build-up to the Australian Open, which starts on January 12.

It was also Goff’s second win in a row against Suitek, after winning en route to winning the WTA Finals event in Riyadh in November.

“I believe I’m one of the best players in the world and when I play good tennis I’m hard to beat,” Goff said after his latest win.

Poland became the runner-up for the second time in a row after losing to Germany in the previous tournament.
