Coco Gough has reached the 3rd round of the Australian Open and is still undefeated in 2025

Coco Gough extended her unbeaten start to 2025 to seven matches and 14 sets by advancing to the third round of the Australian Open with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Britain’s 173rd-ranked Jody Burrage on January 15 at Rod Laver Arena.

Gough, the 2023 US Open champion and a semi-finalist at Melbourne Park a year ago, went through a bit of a rough patch in the second set, battling double-faults and dropping four games in a row to go from break up at 3-1 down to 5-3 down. .

But when Burrage served for the second set, Goff used a four-game run of his own to get back in control to end the contest.

“It was difficult. She was serving really well, so I was just trying to handle it honestly,” said the No. 3-seeded Goff. “She really stepped up in the middle of the second set, so I was just trying to be aggressive when I could.”

Goff hit six of her seven double-faults in the second set, but was much more steady on the baseline overall, finishing the 1 1/2-hour match with 11 groundstroke unforced errors, compared to 37 for Burrage.

Burrage’s final two service games each ended with a double-fault; There were two in a row that made it 6-5.

From there, Goff got the job done as he continued to try to improve with his serve and forehand, focusing on two shots since the end of last season.

“He returned well, so it put pressure on my serve,” Goff said. “If I did anything less, he was victorious.”

Add four straight wins en route to the WTA Finals title in November — including straight-set victories over No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and No. 2 Iga Suatek — and Goff’s winning streak now stretches to 11 matches.

Also part of that run was a win in the United Cup team competition against the 20-year-old American’s next opponent: No. 30 Leila Fernandez, who was runner-up to Emma Radukan at the 2021 US Open.

Fernandez defeated Christina Buksa 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday.
