Four politicians who won senate seats in the last election have a record of favoring China amid geopolitical tensions
Despite China’s glaring, continual offenses against Philippine sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea, some Filipino politicians speak favorably of our overbearing neighbor. Yes, it was former president Rodrigo Duterte who championed the local pro-China bandwagon, but not a few high-ranking government officials seemed happy to jump on it, whether for personal gain or to avoid falling on Duterte’s bad side.
But in the last round of elections, even with Duterte tucked away in a jail cell in the Netherlands, China appeared to have scored a considerable victory — through at least four winning senators, from whom we cannot expect any robust resistance to Chinese intrusions.
