The Nascar Cup series goes to a new venue for a fifth consecutive season. The championship races change next year. How the series crowns its champion can also be different in 2026.
In a sport whose participants can travel almost 200 km / h, it can be dizzy for some – or to others seem to be slow.
Either way, it’s not stagnant.
“I think it always changes and always develops,” said former cup champion Chase Elliott about the sport. “I don’t think it’s ever going to stop. There was a lot of it … the past three or four years. I don’t think that will ever change, but I think they are a better balance between all their different track configurations at the moment and rightly, because I think it could be better.
“No reason why we can’t take all the knowledge we learned for the 75-plus years it was and have it best today as it has ever been.”
However, not all concepts are fertile.
Nascar conveyed the idea for teams about relaxing a few rules for this month’s All-Star race at North Wilkesboro Speedway to give them more creativity with car setups. Teams have decreased for various reasons.
Series officials are constantly investigating what can be done with the racing on short cuts with this car, which debuted in 2022. Goodyear still changes tire connections. Participants and fans also want to see changes with Superspeedway Racing. For some, change may not come soon enough.
“The thing is about everyone’s opinion that you have to understand the full picture of one, how you got there, and two, why things aren’t that simple to change,” said Joey Logano, a three -time cup.
“There are a lot of positive we don’t talk about. There are many negatives we are talking about, because people are so. With the same attitude, complacency is also one of the worst things you can ever have in your life.
“So you have to look at it and say, ‘Ok, what can make us better? “Because you can always improve something. “
Next month’s race at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City continues with the international push of Nascar. The race is the first time since 1958 that the Cup series had a point race outside the United States.
“With Mexico it will be a new experience,” Noah Gragson said. “It will be something that is really kind and something else for Nascar.”
Since 2021, new traces include the cup schedule Circuit of the Americas (2021 debut), Nashville (2021), World Wide Technology Raceway (2022), Chicago Street Race (2023), Iowa (2024) and the Mexico City meeting.
“I think schedule variation works, and it’s proven to work,” said Steve Phelps, Nascar commissioner, last November in Phoenix. ‘It works from an attendance point of view. It works from a judging point of view. Not insignificant it works from a brand point of view, which means to be bold and innovative and do things differently and change things. It drives success.
“I think that’s what we’ve been trying to do as a sport is to do these things. And not just schedule innovation, but also other things. ‘
Nascar has a group that looks at what changes, if any, to make with how the champion is crowned. Such changes can be made after this season.
“You talk to a man who thinks we have a wonderful system,” said Logano, who is one of the drivers in the group. “I would make minimal changes, if any.
“There are different opinions, isn’t it? All of us will be different, probably depending on where you sit. I try to look at it and ask what I think is the most entertaining? ‘
Ben Kennedy, executive vice president of the NASCAR, chief Venue & Racing Innovation Officer, said this week that the group is expected to announce a few months for a few months.
Nascar revealed this week that the championship race for Cup, Xfinity and the Craftsman Truck series from Phoenix to Homestead-Miami Speedway for 2026. It will start a turn of tracks for the title event. Kennedy did not say what other traces would be part of the rotation other than Phoenix and Homestead.
Josh Berry, who intends to make the Cup play -off match for the first time with his win in Las Vegas, has a track in mind for the championship rotation.
“I think the first one to come forward is Las Vegas, not just because we win there, but it just seems to have good races, and I think it’s also a good market for the championship race,” he said. “I think it looks at the two boxes there. This is a very good racetrack, but a very good area that can bring a little excitement for the championship race. “
Kennedy said Daytona would not be under the tracks, as officials unanimously agreed that (the final) should look and feel like we would expect the traditional Nascar races to look and feel. Short tracks, interim tracks, mile tracks are all on the board. Superspeedways, I think we’re all a championship for a championship right now.
But Daytona will remain the season opener. However, the collision is likely to move to different venues and Kennedy said that an international venue could be of the event in the future, but not next year.
“However, I would never exclude internationally in the future,” Kennedy said. ‘We have thoughts about many of it before the season, in the off -season, an exhibition race. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to bring Nascar races to other parts of the world. “
