The Titans raised eyebrows when they announced president of football operations Chad Brinker would have control of the 53-man roster as they began the search to replace former general manager Ran Carthon.
But the team did find the right fit with former Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi, who was introduced at Wednesday’s press conference.
During that media session, Brinker emphasized that he doesn’t see the team structure as a negative. Head coach Brian Callahan reports to Borgonzi, who reports to Brinker, who reports to team owner Amy Adams Strunk.
“I think our structure is unique, but it is not abnormal” said Brinker, via Nick Suss of Nashville Tennessean. “The reason (general managers) get these jobs is because they’re great at identifying talent and picking players. And many of these AGMs (Assistant General Managers), they are in charge of staff. They are in charge of faculty and professional staff, and may have several other duties as well. But they get those jobs and you put them on the seat and then, by the way, you have everything else on it.
“But this team, you have to fix it. That’s why you’re here. Because there is a problem. We don’t get enough football games. The list is not in order. So what got them the job, 80 percent of their time is trying to figure out everything else. Twenty percent do what they are actually hired to do. By the time they figure it out, the cycle starts all over again.”
As Suss notes, the structure isn’t much different from what the Titans had before, though Brinker’s status has been elevated to overseeing the new GM.
We’ll see if he brings Tennessee more success after Callahan’s tenure begins with a 3-14 season in 2024.
