Hampton, GA. – A former champion was ready to ruin Carson Hcevar. Another former champion called him a ‘moron’. And the driver who was his mentor pulled aside Hocevar after Sunday’s race at Atlanta Motor Speedway for a long discussion that ended with a handshake, but little satisfaction.
So ended the night of Hocevar-an evening in which he completed the best second career, but Ryan Blaney, Kyle Busch and Ross Chastain upset.
“We are here to win races, not be a boy orchestra and to love each other and play on the playground,” Hocevar said at Pit Road while surrounded by reporters.
Hocevar, who is in cup in his second year, is known for his aggression – and sometimes too aggressive. There is a line and Busch felt that the 22-year-old crossed it in Sunday’s race.
“Go and tell the 77 (HCEVAR) that he has done the same (exploding) ten times,” Busch said during the radio of his team during the phase 1 break. “I don’t care if I was ruining the whole (exploding) field. I’m over him. … I’m going to ruin his hole. “
Busch explained his feelings after the race.
“He just had a lot, many, very close calls,” Busch told NBC Sports. “He wasn’t even clear to me. I had to lift, and he put me in the first phase in the fence of (turn) 2.
“He just tries to plug in holes and do it the last second and last minute and create logjams on the back. Do it at the end. Do this in the last 30 laps, not in the first 230. “
Hcevar had a quick car and decided he was going to run instead of driving behind, as he regularly did when setting up tracks.
But Sunday was different.
“I chased from the drop of the (green flag),” Hocevar said. “For me, I was honestly taking in” going to take every run and just get a track position. “Every time we lose it, we just get it back.
‘For me, I had to make up for driving (previously in set up track races) and all the experience I could get and be super aggressive and learn every movement I could. I felt that I was super aggressive in Phase 1, maybe sketching people, but at the same time I felt that I knew exactly what I had to do on that (final) restart and put myself in a place to win the race. ‘
Hocevar’s approach did not sit well with Blaney, which was critical about Hocevar last year To deliberately destroy Harrison Burton in a cup of nashville.
The contact Sunday of Hocevar spun Blaney, who ran in the top five with less than 30 laps left.
“I told you Timmy,” Blaney said on his radio to mocker Tim Fedewa, “(HCEVAR is) an absolute weapon.
Fedewa said, “I don’t know what we can do about it.”
Blaney replied: ‘He’s just an idiot. Shooting, He just runs in the back of you. He has no idea where to bump someone and where not to be. He wipes over my bumper as he does. He just has no idea of the whole race.
Blaney spoke to Hocevar after the race and the message was to calm down.
Chastain, who helped lead Hocevar through the ups and downs in his career, pulled Hocevar aside shortly after leaving both of their cars and left him from Pit Road to the inside grass.
Hocevar started overtime behind Chastain again. Chastain led the inside. On the back, Hocevar shot to the center and came through Chastain when the field started the final round.
They talked about two minutes after the race. Sometimes Hocevar moves his hands to explain movements. At one point, Chastain put his hand on Hocevar’s shoulder, just like an older brother to a younger brother while trying to transfer their point.
Chastain did not want to reveal what he told Hocevar. When he was asked by Performance Racing Network if he heard what he wanted to hear about Hocevar, Chastain said, “No sir.”
Hocevar also rejected the unveiling of their discussion.
“Sometimes you agree and disagree on things,” Hocevar said of his conversation with Chastain. “Finally, I felt like I made the decision to win the race. I think we will be able to continue to talk about it, because of course we have each other’s phone numbers. “
After all the Hocevar, he had a chance of victory. When he got to Chastain, Hocevar got a big run and came up on Kyle Larson, who was on the inside. The ultimate winner Christopher Bell was on the outside, while Bell and Larson ran side by side for the lead. Hocevar’s Spire Motorsports team has an alliance with Hendrick Motorsports, but Hocevar pushed Bell’s JGR Toyota instead of Larson’s Hendrick Chevrolet.
Hcevar pushed between Bell and Larson in turn 3, but the warning came out for an accident behind them and left Hocevar in second place.
“I just hit (Bell) to get him off the middle,” Hocevar said. ‘It sucks, the optics of it (press bell instead of Larson). It’s not nice to do this, especially with how good I feel that we are working (Rick Hendrick) and Hendrick Motorsports, the Hendrick Engine program and everything. They do a lot for us.
“To make it happen is by no means what I wanted, but at the same time I felt that I would be middle and not repel a car of (turn) 4.”
While he almost achieved his first win in the Career Cup, Hocevar knows that he has more to do – including some veteran drivers.
“There are things I would clean up, but you’re not going to make the right decisions every time, especially with how fast we go and how many runs (happen),” Hocevar said. “I can just apologize and say that I’m going to get better.”
